Product information "AEA R88 mk2"
The AEA R88 MK2 is a high-performance stereo ribbon microphone that captures the classic “Big Ribbon” sound in a refined and modern design. It effectively combines two matched ribbon elements within a single housing, offering a true stereo recording solution inspired by the sonic character of AEA’s renowned large-format ribbon microphones.
Built on the same large ribbon geometry and acoustic principles found in models like the AEA R44C, the R88 MK2 delivers a powerful low-frequency response down to 20 Hz and a smooth, natural high end. This makes it exceptionally well-suited for capturing complex sound sources such as cymbals, strings, woodwinds, and full ensembles with clarity and depth.
The microphone features two ribbon motors arranged at a precise 90-degree angle, enabling accurate stereo imaging and excellent off-axis response. It is optimized for stereo recording techniques such as Blumlein and Mid-Side (M-S), making it highly versatile for professional studio and location recording applications.
Designed primarily for mid- to far-field use, the R88 MK2 is ideal for chamber music, drum overheads, stereo piano recordings, horn sections, and ensemble capture. Its passive design offers a wide dynamic range with minimal distortion, but it performs best when paired with a high-quality preamp providing at least 60 dB of clean gain and proper impedance matching.
The updated MK2 version includes an improved integrated shockmount for easier positioning and reduced stand-borne vibrations. Finished in a low-reflective stealth black coating, it minimizes visual distraction in live recording environments. For close vocal applications, the use of a pop filter is recommended due to its open design, which prioritizes natural sound over wind protection.
